Celebrating The Schoodic National Scenic Byway

The public is cordially invited to celebrate National Scenic Byway Day, May 10th, 2003. The Schoodic National Scenic Byway will host a free Island Explorer Bus ride along the byway starting at 10:00 AM on May 10th.

The bus will depart from the Hancock-end of the Hancock-Sullivan Bridge on Route 1. Bus riders will be treated to a rolling commentary about the unique scenic, historical, cultural and geological features.

The bus will stop at designated scenic turnouts, including overlooks of Taunton Bay, Frenchman Bay, Winter Harbor and Prospect Harbor. Riders are encouraged to bring their cameras and notebooks. A refreshment break will be sponsored on the way. The entire trip is expected to take about two hours, with riders returned to the starting point. The bus has limited seating capacity, and will be filled on a first come-first served basis.

The Schoodic Scenic Byway received national designation in 2000. The byway is managed by a coalition of volunteers and designated town representatives from Sullivan, Gouldsboro and Winter Harbor with technical support from the Hancock County Planning Commission. This year we are celebrating receiving more than $220,000 in grants for improvements along the byway. These improvements will be coordinated with road renovation and resurfacing on Route 1 in Hancock and Sullivan and along Route 186 in Gouldsboro and Winter Harbor.

The Schoodic Byway Corridor Management Committee is looking for volunteers to work with us this spring and summer to preserve the scenic and historic heritage of this region and to help plan future activities and events. If you would like more information the byway or the May 10th event, you can visit our website,, or call Jim Fisher at the Hancock County Planning Commission at 667-7131.
